Thessaly Floods
Thessaly September 2023. The Thessalian plain was lost under the mud. The devastating floods following the storm “Daniel”, which hit the Thessaly region in central Greece on September 6, 2023, claimed the lives of 17 people and displaced thousands of residents from their homes, bringing complete devastation to farmers and ranchers. The information from the competent authorities to the residents to move to safe areas was done when it was already too late. Many residents were called within a few seconds to leave their homes, abandoning their lives to evacuate to a "safe" place. Experts are warning of an emergency health situation, due to the thousands of dead animals that have been found scattered in various locations for several days and the stagnant water with fuel and also many kinds of waste that were carried away by the rush of the waters. Flooded houses, dead animals, destroyed crops, impassable roads. Residents stranded, exposed to the weather, lacking basic items. Thousands of homes were under water for days, making most unsafe for future habitation, giving a revealing picture to roads in nearby areas. This was the picture in Thessaly for more than two weeks. The difficult situation for the residents came to be burdened by a second storm, the storm "Elias", because of which many villages were flooded again, causing complete despair to the local residents, who, in addition to the ecological and economic disaster, had to face the psychological psychological effects, as their work and life were intertwined with the Thessalian plain, the largest plain of Greece.
